The Project Implementation Unit (PIU) located in Ulaanbaatar will coordinate and implement basic project activities and report these activities to The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). It will also compile its activities with like-minded projects and donor organizations in order to increase the collaboration also among them.

The PIU will closely collaborate with national and local institutions and civilians, concerned by desertification issues. Project four components include support in:
- updating the National Action PLan for Combating Desertification (NAP CD),
- applying sustainable use of natural resources and filed level interventions,
- promoting eco-education and integrating Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into national school curriculum and
- identifying and documenting modern and indigenous soil and water conservation technologies and approaches in Mongolia.

Entry Phase           2007-2008
Main Phase            2008-2011
Exit Pahse             2012-2014

CODEP profits from strong synergies with other SDC programs in Mongolia; thier experiences will be capitalized in the project. It plans to continue to strengthen the agency in regional planning and integrate pastureland use plans into regional development.
Additionally, these SDC programs have already several years of experience in testing technologies for pastureland rehabilitation and improvement and community mobilization and organization, which is an enoroums advantage for CODEP.

Exit Strategy
Each of the four components have their own exit strategies. The aim of capacity development of the National Committee for Combating Desertification (NCCD) is to enable them to effectively coordinate and monitor the National Action Plan (NAP) and all the projects in the sector. Regional planning services will be available to any region. The eco-education curriculum needs to be streamlined into the general education plan of Mongolia, carried out by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture (MESC). Informal education will be implemented by different civil society organizations. Technical solutions to burning issues like irrigation, water scarcity, as well as fuel and energy, will be demonstrated and their sustainability carefully assessed. Only technologies that are simple, not too costly, profitable and can be introduced and adopted in a short time, will be propagated.
