The Coping with Desertification Project (CODEP) consists of four Components, which are implmented in partnership with various government and non-government institutions and private entities.

Component 1          Strengthening institutional capacity and policy and legal framework
Component 2          Field level interventions
Component 3          Education for Sustainalbe Development (ESD) and environmental awareness building
Component 4          Technologies and knowledge management
   

Through these four components, the project intends to address desertification in a comprehensive and integrated manner, linking grassroot experiences with policy level input and knowledge management and education. 

Component 1 
supports the capacity development of the National Committee for Combating Desertification (NCCD) and helps to update and implement the National Action Programme for Combating Desertification (NAP CD);

Component 2
supports local communities with the help of respective authorities to plan and implement soil and water conservation technologies and approaches for more sustainable use of farm and pastureland and fair distribution of available water resources in Khovd aimag;

Component 3 
plays a leading role in integrating Education for sustainalbe development into the school curricula of rpimary and secondary schools in Mongolia. It provides input for establishment of eco-friendly schools and supports public awareness raising about environment and desertification through different mass media tools. 

Component 4 
works with the Desertification Study Centre (DSC) of the Geo-Ecological Institue (GEI) to test, document and share relevant technologies and approaches to combat desertification and to provide policy-makers with adequate information for informed decision-making.
