Component 4 collects the information about best practices and indigenous technologies in coping with desertification followed by the engagement of finding new technologies to tackle the problem.
Several institutes and projects have attempted to collect information on technologies and reports on combating desertification. The project will identify, record and document existing as well as traditional, indigenous technologies and apporaches by setting up a Central database at the Desertification Study Centre (DSC) of the Institute of Geo-Ecology. In addition the project will enter availabe data into the WOCAT database to be worldwide known and accesible.
The WOCAT approach was then used to draft the technology registration methodology. The methodology is currently tested by registering eight technologies produced by the UNDP Sustainable Grassland Management Project and will put them on the WOCAT website.
As the mandate lies with DSC to spread the information and knowledge about desertification CODEP has identified DSC as a key partner for the main phase. The NAP CD update needs to further clarify the role of DSC towards NCCD. Because of its low capacity UNDP has agreed to support capacity developing measures and training for DSC and its staff through the SLM project
The project is also contributing to the capacity building of the staff from DSC and closely cooperating with like-minded international projects and national experts. The given Component is in the synergy with the Component 2 of the Project.
